How do I host my class if we can’t meet in person?

If your class is unable to convene in person, you can host your class remotely using video conferencing. Columbia University recommends using the Zoom video conferencing platform. With Zoom you may generate a meeting link you can share with your students using the Announcements tool in Canvas.

If you have a Zoom account

  1. Create a meeting

  2. Click, copy the invitation

  3. Create a course announcement and paste the meeting information from Zoom into the editor. Include this document on how to join the meeting.

If you don’t have a Zoom account

Some departments have shared Zoom accounts for faculty to use. Please contact your department administrator for more information.

Otherwise you may create a Zoom account by logging into the Columbia Zoom portal.

Once your account is created, please send an email to zoom-admin@columbia.edu and request that your Zoom account is upgraded to pro. Then follow the directions above to setup a meeting and share your meeting information with your course.
