What are Student Groups?

Groups provide students with a collaborative workspace where they will have shared access to Files, Conferences, Announcements and several other tools. You can also create Group Assignments. For a more detailed overview of Groups, please see the Canvas guide.

To create a group:

  • Click on People in the left hand course navigation
  • Within the People menu you will see a tab for Groups next to the Everyone tab.
  • Click on the Groups tab. 
  • Then click  on +Group Set. This is a category that will contain the actual students groups
  • To add students to the group you can manually assign them, have CourseWorks randomly assign them, or allow students to self sign up

Once students have been added to a group or joined on their own, the group will appear in their global navigation under Courses and Groups. Instructors or TAs can access the groups:

  • Go to the People tab
  • Click on the cog next to the group
  • Select Visit Group Home page.
